In his first U.S. appearance in nearly twenty years, Mr. Liao will be introduced by PEN World Festival founder and chair Salman Rushdie and interviewed by journalist Philip Gourevitch. The guest will read from his forthcoming book God Is Red: The Story of How Christianity Survived and Flourished in Communist China, and perform on xiao (Chinese flute), which he learned to play in prison. THE NEW SCHOOL FOR PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT | http://www.newschool.edu/public-engagement Liao Yiwu has been called the "Studs Terkel of China" for his vivid literary portraits of the lives of ordinary Chinese. He was refused permission to travel to New York for the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature earlier this year, but Liao escaped to Berlin via the Vietnamese border last July 6. He had been imprisoned for four years in the 1990s for his epic poem "Massacre," a condemnation of the Chinese government's bloody suppression of the 1989 demonstration at Tiananmen Square. He has endured constant harassment since. Though his books are banned in China, he continues to write. Wild Elephant charges, Kerala, INDIA
In search of wild elephant herds, 'www.indiavideo.org' video crew was exploring the forest areas of Muthanga and Tholpetty in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala State, India. The daylong search finally met with success by evening, when the crew spotted one herd in the Tholpetty forest area. The crew quickly swung into action and mounted the camera on top of the van that they were traveling. As they began to shoot the elephant herd, a jeep came in from the opposite direction from where the crew was standing. The movement of the Mahindra Jeep provoked a he elephant in the herd and he made a dash towards the Mahindra Jeep. The charging elephant was stopped couple of metres from the jeep, as the driver switched on the lights along with continuous honking. This practice of switching on the lights and sounding the horn is usually done to scare elephants, but may not work always. The he elephant backed off into the forest and then made one hesitant move without success. Once the elephant was at a safe distance from the jeep, the driver moved the vehicle with great speed. But to the surprise of every one, the she elephant came back and gave one final charge at the jeep, which by that time sped away to safety. Setback For Narendra Modi As Gujarat HC Upholds Lokayukta Appointment (TV5)
The Gujarat high court on Wednesday upheld the appointment of Lokayukta by the governor and dismissed the plea of the Narendra Modi government that had challenged it. In a majority decision, the court concluded that governor Dr Kamla Beniwal was right in appointing retired HC judge RA Mehta as Lokayukta and dismissed the state government's petition challenging the governor's act. The third judge, justice V M Sahai's opinion concurred with justice Akil Kureshi's.

Yeh Hai Jalwa is a talent show running on Indian television. For those who don't know, it is a talent hunt for the "best" choreographer. They are given different types of people who don't know a thing about dancing and have to teach them to dance to their own choreography which is then marked by judges and the public votes determine who gets through to the next round. This particular episode was themed on Indian cinema with the competitors choosing a theme and choreographing a performance around it. This particular act is very heart touching for the message it sends and the team went on to win the event. I think this is worth watching and is sure to bring a tear to many peoples eyes. If you've watched Slumdog Millionaire, you will know what the act is referring to.

Heres how Sohail Khan decided to stand up for big brother Salman by publically making fun of Vivek Oberoi at a party on Tuesday evening. Vivek Oberoi mustve never in his wildest dreams imagined that he would be called a waiter at a party. Its he who always calls Ganpat for the daaru, right? Well, this time the tables were turned during Ramesh Tauranis silver anniversary, which had its share of drama with Vivek being the butt of the joke. Salman Khans younger brother Sohail Khan didnt miss the opportunity to cock a snook at Salmans sworn enemy Vivek Oberoi. It was bhai chaara at its best when Sohail decided to stand up for his bade bhaiya. When Sohail walked in, Vivek was busy sipping a drink. Sohail proceeded further into the hall where the party was gaining momentum. A few seconds later, Sohail saw Vivek standing quietly in one corner. On spotting Vivek, Sohail couldnt help but remember the enmity between Vivek and Salman and he decided to get cheeky. An eyewitness says, Suddenly Sohail called out Oye, Vivek!. On hearing his name, Vivek looked towards Sohail. Immediately, Sohail looked at a waiter carrying a tray of drinks and again said, Oye, Vivek, zaraa idhar aana. Viveks face fell when he realised that Sohail had humiliated him. The shocked actor simply put his head down and walked a few paces away from where Sohail was standing. Did Vivek want to confront Sohail? And did he control his anger as Salman was shortly expected to make an appearance at the do? We may never know, but one thing is for sure, poor Vivek is still paying for that much publicised press conference he had called in April 2003 complaining that Salman harassed and threatened him over the phone for his relationship with Aishwarya Rai, with whom Salman was romantically involved earlier. A friend of Sohail (name withheld on request) present at the party confirmed the incident. He laughed and said, Uske baad Vivek ka chehra dekhne laayak tha.
