September 13, 2011 | The New School, Tishman Auditorium | New York City With Liao Yiwu, Wen Huang, Salman Rushdie, and Philip Gourevitch PEN American Center is honored to present poet, novelist, musician, and documentarian Liao Yiwu, one of China's most exciting and most censored writers, in his first U.S. appearance. Liao Yiwu, who has been called the "Studs Terkel of China" for his vivid literary portraits of the lives of ordinary Chinese, was denied permission to travel to New York for the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature earlier this year, but escaped to Berlin via the Vietnamese border on July 6, 2011. Mr. Liao was imprisoned for four years in the 1990s for his epic poem "Massacre," a condemnation of the government's bloody crackdown at Tiananmen Square, and has endured constant harassment since. Though all his books are banned in China, he has continued to write. He is visiting New York on the eve of the publication of his new book, entitled God Is Red: The Secret Story of How Christianity Survived and Flourished in Communist China, translated by Wen Huang. Huang, a journalist and author, also joins Liao at the event. Not only has Huang been working actively to support and publicize Liao Yiwu's work since 2001, he has translated Liao's major works into English, including God is Red. Huang also received a PEN Translation Fund Grant in 2007. PEN President Kwame Anthony Appiah notes, "As it gets harder for independent-minded writers to leave China, an opportunity like this to hear directly from a great Chinese writer is an increasingly precious thing." This very special evening of music and words includes a reading from his forthcoming book and a performance of the xiao, or Chinese flute, which Mr. Liao learned to play while incarcerated. Neelam (born 3 March 1968) is a former Indian actress and an established jewelery designer.Neelam was born and spent her early childhood in Hong Kong, before her family shifted to Bangkok. She learnt Ballet for 5 years in Hong Kong. The family has a traditional jewelery making business. She got married to Rishi Sethia, son of a rich businessman from U.K despite opposition from Rishi's family. They married in Hong Kong, but divorced.She also dated Bobby Deol for long in late 1980s to until 1993 . It is rumored that Govinda, her co-star in many films had a crush on her, and pursued her for a long time before he finally gave up.These days she is seen with actor Sameer Soni at parties and events. She is very close to Sanjay Kapoor's wife - Maheep Kapoor and is regularly seen in the Mumbai with her other close friends Ekta Kapoor, Sunita Menon, Bhavna Pandey and Farah Khan.After her early childhood in Hong Kong, her family moved to Bangkok and Neelam was holidaying in Mumbai and was approached by Ramesh Behl. She decided to give it a shot and did Jawaani in 1984 alongside Karan Shah (Tina Munim's nephew), but the film became a flop. She soldiered on ahead and became famous in 1986 in the film Ilzaam opposite another debutante Govinda. She went on to make a regular pairing with Govinda in movies such as Love 86 (1986), Khudgarz (1987), Hatya (1988), Taaqatwar (1989) and Do Qaidi (1989). Since then she made many other movies in the late 1980s wit mixed success. She is also noted for her appearance in the 1998 movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai where she appeared as herself in the movie playing a VJ. In 1999 she appeared in the multi-starrer family film Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United. Her most recent release was Kasam in 2001.Even while pursuing her career in acting, she was into jewelery designing and was involved in the family business. She did a formal course in Mumbai and after saying goodbye to films in 1999, she started her out commercially on her own under the name of Neelam Jewels. She opened her showroom in Mumbai in 2004 and has never looked back since.

Neetu Singh (born 8 July 1958) is an Indian and Bollywood Actress of the 70s. She worked as a child actor under the name Baby Sonia, she played as 'Roopa' (child actress) in 1966 movie Dus Lakh, she also played dual roles in the hit film Do Kaliyan (1968). Neetu Singh made her debut as a heroine in 1972 with Rikshawala which was a flop. She took a small role in Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973), which became a hit, and her sizzling dance number to the song Lekar hum brought her so much attention that she was immediately offered lead roles again. In most films, Neetu was cast as the fun-loving daughter or the 'optimistic' or 'lively' girlfriend. She acted with the top stars of her day, especially Rishi Kapoor with whom she appeared in half a dozen films. On screen and off it, Neetu and Rishi Kapoor fell in love. This led to the couple tying the knot in 1979 after a much publicized engagement that was the talk of Bollywood. Neetu was 21 at that time. She was at the top of her career, having just been nominated for a Filmfare Award as Best Supporting Actress for Kaala Pathar (1979), but she retired. She dismissed the allegation that she left films, because it was customary for actresses married to the famous Kapoor family to retire after marriage, claiming that it was her 'personal choice.Neetu is married to Rishi Kapoor and they have two children, Riddhima, a fashion designer and recently married to a Delhi based industrialist called Bharat Sahni. Their son Ranbir Kapoor is a Bollywood actor.

Akon at Shahrukh Khan's Home in Mumbai
International singer Akon seems to be making the most of his time in Mumbai. After performing for a select gathering on Monday night and attending a press conference with SRK and Kareena Kapoor for their upcoming movie (for which hes recording a song) the next afternoon, he was seen partying the night away on Tuesday. Shah Rukh Khan hosted a big bash to introduce Akon to his Bollywood buddies, and cars streamed into Mannat as Karan Johar, Abhay Deol, Fardeen and Natasha Khan, Goldie and Sonali Behl, Arjun Rampal and Mehr Jessia, Chunky and Bhavna Pandey, Kunal Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Ritesh Sidhwani and Ayaan Mukherjee stepped out. Sanjay and Maheep Kapoor entered with Neelam and Seema Khan while Dino Morea came with Nandita Mahtani and Renu Chainani. Uday Chopra drove down with Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan, the two men catching up on old times through the night. Jai Mehta, Surily Goel, Farah Khan Ali, Malaika Arora Khan with her sister Amrita Arora, who made her first appearance post her delivery, and Wasim Akram were also there to mingle with Akon.

The highlight of the concert was to promote peace between both countries through a project called Aman ki Asha. The first time in the history of the subcontinent major media groups in the two countries have launched a concerted effort to bring people together and create an environment to for peace and dialogue between India and Pakistan to succeed. Part 1 of the piece reflects the high point of this concert Aman Ki Asha. Both artists expressed their views about their respective countries and about sharing the stage. Atif Aslam : Heartthrob of millions around the world with a Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Distinction) from Pakistani government. He was awarded Best Playback singer in India in 2006. MTV named him as the most stylish and most wanted male singer in the subcontinent. Shreya Ghoshal : 4-time National Award and 4 Filmfare Award winning playback singer in Bollywood. Leonard Peltier also known as Tate Wikuwa is a human rights and ecological activist, member of the American Indian Movement. In a trial, which was called a disgrace for the American legal system by the former general attorney Ramsey Clark, he was falsely accused of murdering two FBI agents and sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment in 1976. Leonard Peltier is innocent! But the government wanted to brand him as a criminal and through him the Native American civil rights organisation AIM. Their 'crime'; to protest against the ongoing land-robbery and constant human rights violations committed by the US-government, the FBI and the mining-companies in the reservations of South-Dakota. At that time those companies tried by all means to lay their hands on the mineral resources (mainly uranium) of the Native American Territory. As a consequence of the uranium mining activities the drinking water was poisoned and the death rate among the Native Americans rose dramatically. Leonard Peltier, a Lakota-Ojibway native American, is a symbol for the justified struggle of his people and it's suffering. The vision of this man, unbroken to this day, is justice, a considerate relation towards Mother Earth and a peaceful co-existence of 'the white man and the red man' through a revival of Native American culture and traditions. This song carries his message into the world and hopefully help Leonard Peltier to finally obtain the right to spend the remainder of his life in freedom, instead of suffering the unspeakable injustice, he has endured until now up to the year 2041! Under US law he can be freed only by presendential pardon. Countless people have already stood up for his release, amongst them well known personalities as Mother Theresa, H.H. The US actor with Albanian roots, James Belushi, has been decorated in Tirana on November 12 2008 by President Bamir Topi for taking care of his family heritage, the ATA news agency reported. "You are a remarkable case we are proud of you," Topi said after handing the Honour of the Nation medal to Belushi in "gratitude to the man who inherited and preserved in the love for Albania and his Albanian descent." A first-generation Albanian-American, Belushi admitted he was not sure "what I have done to deserve it - except that I have always been proud for who I am and where I come from." Belushi, 54, is best known for comic roles in the cult US TV series 'Saturday Night Live' and has starred in numerous big-hitting films throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Albania awarded the Honour of the Nation medal to people such as Mother Theresa, a Catholic nun of Albanian roots famous for her humanitarian work.
