Just when the tourist bus to Goa is leaving Bombay Central, Mala - Aroona Irani comes running and boards it. Upkar (उपकार) was a 1967 Indian Hindi film directed by Manoj Kumar. Manoj Kumar started his Mr Bharat persona and his brand of patriotism with this film. He played a village man, who sacrifices everything to get his brother educated. His brother (Prem Chopra) goes abroad and comes back a selfish man wanting his share of the property. Also stars Asha Parekh as a doctor promoting family planning, Kamini Kaushal, Prem Chopra, Aruna Irani and Pran in his first positive character role. The film won the top spot at the box office in 1967 and won several major awards. Music is by Kalyanji Anandji. Lyrics by Gulshan Bawra, Indivar, Qamar Jalalabadi and Prem Dhawan........... Prabodh Chandra Dey (born 1 May 1919), better known by his nickname Manna Dey is one of the greatest playback singers in Hindi and Bengali films. He has recorded more than 3500 songs over the course of his career. Along with Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, he dominated Indian film playback music from the 1950s to the 1970s. Accolades and awards; Mohammad Rafi once said to reporters: "You listen to my songs. Music is by S.D. Burman and lyrics by Shailendra................. Mukesh Chand Mathur (Hindi: मुकेश चन्द माथुर) (22 July 1923 27 August 1976) was an Indian playback singer of Bollywood. Along with Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, he dominated Indian film playback music from the 1950s to the 1970s. Mukesh's voice was noticed by Motilal (a popular actor in Hindi films, also a distant relative of Mukesh) when he sang at his sister's wedding. Motilal took him to Bombay, let him stay with him and even arranged for singing lessons by pandit jagannath prasad for him. During this period, Mukesh managed to bag a role in a Hindi film, Nirdosh (Innocent) (1941). His first song was dil hi bujha hua ho to as an actor singer for Nirdosh. He got his break as a playback singer for Actor Motilal himself in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar'music by Anil Biswas & Lyrics by Aah Sitapuri' (First Look). The first song he sang for a Hindi film was Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne De (If the heart burns, let it burn), which was incidentally picturised on Motilal. Mukesh died of a heart attack on 27 August 1976 in Detroit, Michigan, USA, where he had gone for a concert. His body was carried back to India by Lata Mangeshkar, where a grand funeral ceremony took place as many famous actors, personalities of the Indian film industry, and fans paid tribute to the late singer. When the news of his death reached Raj Kapoor, he remarked, "I have lost my voice," which is a testimony to the timeless and unforgettable association of Mukesh's voice (in playback) to the immensely popular songs of Raj Kapoor's films. Kalyanpur provided playback singing for Miyān Bibi Rāzi (1960), Bāt Ek Rāt Ki (1962), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Dil Hi To Hai (1963), Shagoon (1964), Jahān Āra (1964), Sānjh Aur Sawerā (1964), Noor Jahān (1967), Saathi (1968) and Pakeezāh (1971). She sang for composers Shankar Jaikishan, Roshan, Madan Mohan, S. D. Burman, Hemant Kumar, Chitragupta, Naushad, S. N. Tripathi, and Ghulam Mohammed, singing the most songs for the first two in the list. She has sung over 740 movie and non-movie songs. Kalyanpur also recorded some memorable songs with a classical base, including Manamohan Man Mein Ho Tumhi, Mere Sang Gā Gungunā, and Gir Gayi Re More Māthe Ki Bindiyā. She received three times the prestigious Sur Sringar Samsad award for the best classical song in a Hindi movie. The style is rare, though not entirely absent, in North and West Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Kashmir. It is a musical tradition that stretches back more than 700 years. Originally performed mainly at Sufi shrines or dargahs throughout South Asia, it has also gained mainstream popularity. Qawwali music received international exposure through the work of the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, largely due to several releases on the Real World label, followed by live appearances at WOMAD festivals. Other famous Qawwali singers include Pakistan's Sabri Brothers and Aziz Mian. The roots of Qawwali can be traced back to 8th century Persia (today's Iran and Afghanistan). During the first major migration from Persia, in the 11th century, the musical tradition of Sema migrated to South Asia, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Amir Khusro Dehelvi of the Chisti order of Sufis is credited with fusing the Persian and Indian musical traditions to create Qawwali as we know it today in the late 13th century in India (Hindustani classical music is also attributed to him). The word Sama is often still used in Central Asia and Turkey to refer to forms very similar to Qawwali, and in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the formal name used for a session of Qawwali is Mehfil-e-Sama. Qaul (Arabic: قَوْل) is an "utterance (of the prophet)", Qawwāl is someone who often repeats (sings) a Qaul, Qawwāli is what a Qawwāl sings............. A group of qawwali musicians, called a party (or Humnawa in Urdu), typically consists of eight or nine men including a lead singer, one or two side singers, one or two harmoniums (which may be played by the lead singer, side singer or someone else), and percussion. If there is only one percussionist, he plays the tabla and dholak, usually the tabla with the dominant hand and the dholak with the other one (i.e. a left-handed percussionist would play the tabla with his left hand). Often there will be two percussionists, in which case one might play the tabla and the other the dholak. There is also a chorus of four or five men who repeat key verses, and who aid and abet percussion by hand-clapping. The performers sit cross-legged on the ground in two rows — the lead singer, side singers and harmonium players in the front row, and the chorus and percussionists in the back row. Andaz (Hindi: अन्दाज़, Persian,Urdu: اَنداز) is a 1971 Hindi romantic movie starring Shammi Kapoor, Hema Malini and Rajesh Khanna. The film was directed by Ramesh Sippy. Music by Shankar-Jaikishan. Synopsis; This film tells the story of a widow Sheetal (Hema Malini) who is left devastated after the death of her husband Raj (Rajesh Khanna). She is left with one child to look after and teaches in a school and one of her students is a daughter of the widower Ravi (Shammi Kapoor). The children become instrumental in getting the single parents to meet and fall in love. Andaz was one of the last movies for which the great music directors duo, Shankar- Jaikishan composed music together. Jaikishan died of cirrhosis of the liver on September 12, 1971 at the young age of 42. Coincidentally, one of the most popular songs from this film - Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana, Yahaan Kal Kya Ho, Kisne Jaana (Life is a beautiful journey, One never knows what's going to happen tomorrow) turned out to be the last song that Jaikishan recorded before his untimely death. Andaz also proved to be the last hit for Shammi Kapoor as a lead hero. Shantaram Motion Picture Scientific Research and Cultural Foundation, established in 1993, shortly after his death, and offers various awards to film makers, the award is presented on 18 November each year being Shantaram's birth anniversary He married thrice; His first marriage was with Vimla, his second marriage was to the actress Jayashree, with whom he had two children: the actress Rajshree whom he launched in the film Geet Gaya Patharon Ne , and a son, Kiran Kumar, sometime sheriff of Bombay and Marathi film director. His third wife was actress, Sandhya who was his co-star in Do Aankhen Barah Haath as well the heroine of his films like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje and Navrang. His other two children are Prabhat Kumar and Madhura Pandit, who is married to classical singer, Pandit Jasraj and have a daughter actress, Durga Jasraj ]. He also introduced film actor Jeetendra in Hindi cinema with the film Geet Gaaya Patharonay. He was fondly called Annasaheb.

STORY OF PHIR SUBAH HOGI :- Ram (Raj Kapoor), an impoverished law student, is dependent on money orders from his mother. If the money orders are late, he often pawns his things to the local moneylender to get by. Once he saves a little boy and pays the doctor's fee with all the money he has since the boy's family is even more impoverished than him. As he visits there more often he falls in love with the boy's sister Sohni (Mala Sinha). Sohni manages to make ends meet by stitching clothes for the neighbours. The wily Harbhanslal (Jagdish Sethi) keeps supplying Sohni's alcoholic father Gopal (Nana Palsikar) with liquor on credit in order to get him to marry Sohni to him. Sohni's marriage is fixed to Harbanslal. Sohni asks Ram to save her. He goes to the moneylender to rob his safe but the robbery goes drastically wrong.Ram kills the moneylender by accident. Gopal dies due to his alcoholim while Ram's college friend Rehman (Rehman) doesn't let Sohni's wedding to Harbanslal take place. Ram is both being eaten up by his guilt and is being pursued by a police officer (Mubarak) who suspects Ram to be guilty and tries to get him to give himself up. Another man is finally caught for the crime but as he is about to be sentenced in court Ram's conscience catches up with him and he admits to his crime while making a fervent plea on behalf of the dispossesseds' rights to defend themselves against the real villains in society. Seeing the situation, he is given a sentence of 3 years. Sohni says she will wait for him.

From the point of view of Indian scenario, it is an emotional piece of work to inculcate a culture of social justice in tune with the human compassions. The film concentrates on the various malevolent aspects of city life like exploitation, crime, unpleasantness & slums and the struggle of the downtrodden even for their basic needs for their day-to-day living. The film successfully brings out, in an extremely convincing manner, both the external and the internal conflicts of its characters. It is more or less a philosophical dealing of the guilt and mental mayhem which go through the mind of the hero who accidentally murders someone. Raj Kapoor, in fact, gave one of his life best performances in this film. The character played by Raj Kapoor was, virtually, internalized by him and rendered mind blowing performance and in a perfectly befitting manner. His performance depicting a man fighting with himself and his guilt was par excellence. Mala Sinha was in the female lead in the film and this film was amongst the better performances of her career. Among the supporting cast, Rehman appearing as heros munificent friend who tries to help him out as much as he can and makes the most of it creating a character who though cannot be of much help but walk along as a true friend. Mubarak reflects strong screen presence in playing the role of the police officer trying to exploit the heros mental turbulence and ultimately to make him confess to the murder. The film had excellent musical score by Khayyam and self-illuminating lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi. Some extremely beautiful songs, written by Sahir Ludhianvi with Music by Khayyam were sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle, the most glaring of which were :- - Aasamaan pe hai khudaa aur zamiin pe ham - Chiin-o-arab hamaaraa, hindostaan hamaaraa - Phir naa kije merii gustaakh nigaahii kaa gilaa - Woh subah kabhii to aayegii, Woh subah kabhii to aayegii The best part for the song Woh subah kabhii to aayegii, of course was the modification from Woh Subah Kabhi To Aayegi to Woh Subah Hum Hii Toh Laayeinge at the end of the film which depicts Sahir's leaning towards a system of collective change. Though released way back in 1958, the film still has relevance in the present times. In fact, the problems of poverty, homelessness, exploitation of the poor and corruption have multiplied manifold and even 60 years after of the Independence, we pray Woh Subah Kabhi to Aayegi

"Andaz" (Hindi: अन्दाज़, Persian, Urdu: اَنداز) is a 1971 Hindi romantic movie starring Shammi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Rajesh Khanna, Simi Garewal, Aruna Irani and Achala Sachdev. The film was directed by Ramesh Sippy. Andaz was one of the last movies for which the great music directors duo, Shankar- Jaikishan composed music together. Jaikishan died of cirrhosis of the liver on September 12, 1971 at the young age of 42. Coincidentally, one of the most popular songs from this film - Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana, Yahaan Kal Kya Ho Kisne Jaana ( Life is a beautiful journey, One never knows what's going to happen tomorrow) turned out to be the last song that Jaikishan recorded before his untimely death. Andaz also proved to be the last hit for Shammi Kapoor as a lead hero. Even the success of this movie is credited to the Rajesh Khanna Mania of the 70's, as Rajesh Khanna only appeared for five minutes in the movie, and still created a stir. Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai

Love hits people in all sorts of ways. To Sanjay (Uday Chopra) however love hit him like a ton of bricks. "Barsaat Ki Raat" (Hindi: बरसात की रात, Urdu: برسات کی رات) is a 1960 Bollywood film starring Bharat Bhushan, Madhubala, Shyama, Mumtaz Begum and K.N. Singh. It was directed by P. L. Santoshi. This film was released in Black-and-White and is widely considered to be a classic. The film became particularly popular for its qawwali songs and was one of the biggest hits at the box-office in 1960. The film was also one of the last to star celebrated actress Madhubala. Although Madhubla gets top billing, and she is always good, she does not have a major performing role. The main character is played by the highly underrated Shayama who delivers an excellent performance. Qawwali music received international exposure through the work of the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, largely due to several releases on the Real World label, followed by live appearances at WOMAD festivals. Other famous Qawwali singers include Pakistan's Sabri Brothers and Aziz Mian. The roots of Qawwali can be traced back to 8th century Persia (today's Iran and Afghanistan). During the first major migration from Persia, in the 11th century, the musical tradition of Sema migrated to South Asia, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Amir Khusro Dehelvi of the Chisti order of Sufis is credited with fusing the Persian and Indian musical traditions to create Qawwali as we know it today in the late 13th century in India (Hindustani classical music is also attributed to him). The word Sama is often still used in Central Asia and Turkey to refer to forms very similar to Qawwali, and in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the formal name used for a session of Qawwali is Mehfil-e-Sama. Qaul (Arabic: قَوْل) is an "utterance (of the prophet)", Qawwāl is someone who often repeats (sings) a Qaul, Qawwāli is what a Qawwāl sings............. A group of qawwali musicians, called a party (or Humnawa in Urdu), typically consists of eight or nine men including a lead singer, one or two side singers, one or two harmoniums (which may be played by the lead singer, side singer or someone else), and percussion. If there is only one percussionist, he plays the tabla and dholak, usually the tabla with the dominant hand and the dholak with the other one (i.e. a left-handed percussionist would play the tabla with his left hand). Often there will be two percussionists, in which case one might play the tabla and the other the dholak. There is also a chorus of four or five men who repeat key verses, and who aid and abet percussion by hand-clapping. The performers sit cross-legged on the ground in two rows — the lead singer, side singers and harmonium players in the front row, and the chorus and percussionists in the back row.
