JAIPUR LITERATURE FESTIVAL KICKSTARTS AMID SUSPENSE OVER SALMAN RUSHDIE'S VISIT

CVB NEWS- Overshadowed by the controversy over Salman Rushdie's participation, The Jaipur Literature Festival kick started in the Pink City on Friday, 20th January. Queen Mother of Bhutan inaugurated the five day literature fiesta at Hotel Diggy Palace of Jaipur. The day started with vibrant folk performances both by Indian and international artists followed by participants taking the stage. The opening day saw some big names from Indian literature and cinema at the event. Over 200 authors are expected to mark their presence at what is billed as Asia's finest literature fest.

Emory University Professor of Film Studies Matthew Bernstein, Associate Professor of Asian Studies Deepika Bahri, and Writer-in-residence Salman Rushdie participate in the conversation. http://www.emory.edu/rushdie February 28, 2010 In conjunction with the lecture, Emory's Department of Film Studies and the Provost's office sponsored screenings of Mehta's "Elements" trilogy, an exploration of tradition and change in 20th century India. 'Fire' is about the politics of sexuality, 'Earth' is about the politics of nationalism, and 'Water' is about the politics of religion." Kirtichakra- Indian NSG film - Mohanlal -11

Kirthichakra is a 2006 Malayalam war film directed by debutant Major Ravi, and starring Mohanlal and Jeeva. The film is based on true events related to militancy in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The film was released on August 7, 2006 worldwide. The film was dubbed into Tamil as Aran. The title is derived from the Indian gallantry award, Kirti Chakra. The film was a critical and commercial success. Kirtichakra is one of the few films to depict the operation style of the National Security Guards. Major Mahadevan (Mohanlal) is an officer deputed to the National Security Guards (NSG), and has been assigned on counter terrorism activities in Kashmir and commands an elite group of NSG commandos. He calls back his buddy pair Havildar Jaikumar (Jeeva) from his honeymoon leave because he had received an information about major activities of the militants and he felt Jaikumar is needed for the team. The commandos raid a mosque in civilian dress and seize a big collection of arms and explosives. Later during an operation focused on some cottages near the Dal Lake, a commando in the team is killed and an outraged Jaikumar shoots down a captured terrorist who challenges the commandos. A human rights activist (Shwetha Menon) learns about this and threatens to file a complaint with the government. She later understands the situation and the sincerity of the commandos and decides not to proceed with the complaint. Meanwhile a group of terrorists from Afghanistan and Pakistan conspire to hit the Hazratbal Shrine with a missile, and they thinks this will create unrest in the region and the Indian army will be blamed for this. They highjack a house which offers good vantage point to the shrine and plants the missile there. Some of them rapes a girl in the house and shoots a person who protests. A military patrolling vehicle hears the gunshot and as they approach the house, they are fired upon. The patrolling team intimates the NSG, and Mahadevan and his team immediately joins the battle. After a long operation, the team kills the terrorists, frees the civilian hostages and disarms the missile. But a civilian informs that the chief of the terrorists is not to be seen among the corpses, and the commandos start a combing operation in the house. They locate the terrorist and Mahadevan recognises the man has the same person who had killed his wife and daughter. The terrorist is killed but he manages to shoot at Mahadevan. Mahadevan is covered by Jaikumar who gets hit by the bullet and dies. Jaikumar is awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumousl

Update on Police execution of Muslims in India

Amit Shah behind Prajapati murder: CBI Ashok Bagriya , CNN-IBN Updated Mar 09, 2011 at 07:04pm IST New Delhi: Former Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah conspired with policemen to kill Tulsiram Prajapati, a witness to the Sohrabuddin fake encounter, CBI told the Supreme court on Wednesday. Shah is also a close aide to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The CBI has claimed that Shah had conspired with a section of Gujarat police officials to eliminate Prajapati in 2006. The CBI told the Supreme Court this was because he was witness in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and just prior to Prajapati's encounter death there were many phone calls between Shah and IPS official Rajkumar Pandian. CBI has petitioned the Supreme court to merge both the Sohrabuddin and Prajapati encounter killngs and hand over the investigation to them. Narmada Bai, the mother of the deceased, had sought transfer of the case to CBI on the ground that he was a key witness in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case which was transferred to the agency by the apex court on January 12, 2010. CBI's senior counsel KTS Tulsi also supported the plea for transfer of the case to the agency on the ground that Tulsiram Prajapati's killing was an "integral part" of the Sohrabuddin killing. While Sohrabuddin and Kasuer Bi were killed in a fake encounter by the Gujarat police in November 2005, Tulsiram Prajapati, it was alleged, was shot dead by the police in a similar encounter on December 27, 2006 to destroy all evidence. This report has once again put Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in a spot. His is the only state government in the country which is not willing to bear 25 per cent share of the central-sponsored pre matric scholarship scheme for the minorities. The Centre gives around Rs 22 lakh ($45,753.21) scholarships for poor Muslims students, of which more than Rs 57,000 ($1,185.42) is earmarked for Gujarat alone. Every child whose parents earn less than Rs 1 lakh ($2,079.14) per annum/year is entitled to this scholarship and can get an amount between Rs 800 ($16.63) to Rs 1500 ($31.18). Last year the Gujarat government wrote to the Centre that such schemes based on minority status of a community will not help in the countrys development. This year again, despite of repeated reminders, the state government has not earmarked any money which means the minority students will remain deprived of their due. This is unconstitutional, says Congress spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi. This scholarship scheme is a part of Prime Ministers 15 point programme for minorities and Gujarat is the only state opposing it.

Sarojini Devi wished that her three grand daughters who had lost their parents, should have arranged marriages and should not fall in love. But she found it difficult to get them married to young men of her choice, because the eldest of the three sisters was a man-hater and the two young sisters were already in love. Sarojini Devi offers Ashok the job of breaking the love affairs of the two younger sisters and making the elder sister agreeable to the idea of marrying a young man of her granny's choice. To get the money for her sister's eye operation, Ashok accepts the offer and the unusual assignment. During his new position in the new household, where Ashok admirably succeeds in carrying out his assignment, but he himself falls in love with the eldest sister Asha. Granny gets furious, she exposes Ashok as a paid man and turns him out of the house. On reaching his own house empty handed Ashok discovers that his blind sister has been raped by an unknown criminal in his absence. Swearing revenge, Ashok set out in search of the rapist. The rapist, Pran in the meanwhile, has managed to get engaged to Asha. In a criminal conspiracy he abducts the honest granny and substituted her evil sister in her place. Ashok, in search of his sister, was injured in an explosion caused by Pran. In the hospital, he is nursed by none else than his own lost sister Roopa, who recovered her eyesight after the kind behaviour of a saintly surgeon. But feeling ashamed of her own dishonour, Roopa left the hospital without meeting her brother. Pran and Asha engaged, the granny abducted, his sister lost again.. Ashok finds that life was being too harsh upon him. He loses his faith in God, but soon he finds his sister again but she is critically ill.. he is left with no alternative but to pray for his sister's life. The Nivi style is today's most popular sari style. The Nivi saree was popularized through the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma by modifying the South Indian saree called mundum neriyathum. In one of his painting, the Indian subcontinent was shown as a mother wearing a flowing Nivi saree. Gujarati style differs from the Nivi only in the manner that the loose end is handled. In this style, the loose end is draped over the right shoulder rather than the left, and is also draped back-to-front rather than the other way around.
