Dr Subramanian Swamy explains How Participatory notes are destroying Indian Share Market

One of the key Indian politician (Sonia Gandhi) complained to P Chidambaram that instead of giving interest on our Black money Swiss banks are charging 2% service Charge. So Mr Chidambaram came with a new idea. He created a new financial derivative called "Participatory Notes". So what is participatory notes? You take rupees give it to Hawala man and Hawala man will send that to Europe. Take that money in USD and give that money to Morgan Stanley or Fidelity Investment and put that money in counter and say give me the participatory notes. Only country in the world which has Participatory Notes is India. They will give the peace of paper on which only amount will be written and then give that note to Mutual Fund and ask please invest this money (black money) in Stock Market. Because of such investment Stock Market booms and today our Stock market has become completely rigged. Because of this Middle class people are loosing money heavily. There was only one problem left whose solution also done by Mr Chidambaram. That if you sells that stock you have to pay 25% capital gain tax. So he suggested that if the money is coming via Mauritius route and if you create a 1$ company and if that company invests then there will not be any tax because Mauritius is a very small and poor country. Indian laws has been desinged in such a way that SEBI (Security exchange bureau of India) has been barred from asking any question about participatory notes. Dr Subramanian Swamy speech in Mumbai on 5th Feb, 2012. This event was organized by Moneylife Foundation lead by Suchita Dalal. Dr. Swamy goes at depth of what stems corrupption in our country. He digs deep into the indian culture and explains its roots. Coming to the issue of 2G,he first explains what 2G is all about.How he came to know about it and how he pursued the case single handedly. He speaks about the recent judgement by the CBI special court and expresses regret about the seemingly wrong decision. He expresses his genuine concern over the matter and tells why he believes the judgement is fishy. However he expresses his confidence over getting due justice to this nation. He talks about the issue of black money and how the UPA govt. has been trying hard to sppress teh documents containong names of those with illegal money in foreign banks. This casts a grave shadow of doubt over the intentions of UPA and its stand on corruption. However, corruption is not a matter to be taken lightly. He describes how it leads to inflation and substandard infrastructure and polarization of money. For example it leads to investment in luxury goods while goods for common man get expensive. Same for dwindling investment in areas of agriculture, food processing etc He also touches the issue of FDI and tells why it's an unbalaced economic choice for India. No matetr which corporation invests in india, they are all here for making huge profits. He talks about the hawala channel and how ISI has a record of every single hawala transaction. This becomes a threat to the national security as this can be used by ISI to blackmail those in higher offices. 2G spectrum made available consistent - Subramanian Swamy

Telecom regulator TRAI on Monday proposed a steep minimum price for auction of 2G telecom spectrum, setting off fears of a hike in mobile phone tariffs which are at present among the cheapest in the world. The regulator, whose recommendations are not binding on the government, valued 2G spectrum at about Rs 7 lakh crore, nearly seven times more than Rs 1.04 lakh crore that the government had received through auction of 3G spectrum in 2010. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) proposed a minimum or base price of Rs 3,622.18 crore for every mega Hertz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band, where radio airwaves have been freed after the Supreme Court cancelled all mobile permits issued by the then telecom minister A Raja in 2008. Christopher Hitchens (1989) on Rushdie

Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) on 19 June 1947. He went to school in Bombay and at Rugby in England, and read History at King's College, Cambridge, where he joined the Cambridge Footlights theatre company. After graduating, he lived with his family who had moved to Pakistan in 1964, and worked briefly in television before returning to England, beginning work as a copywriter for an advertising agency. His first novel, Grimus, was published in 1975. His second novel, the acclaimed Midnight's Children, was published in 1981. It won the Booker Prize for Fiction, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for fiction), an Arts Council Writers' Award and the English-Speaking Union Award, and in 1993 was judged to have been the 'Booker of Bookers', the best novel to have won the Booker Prize for Fiction in the award's 25-year history. The novel narrates key events in the history of India through the story of pickle-factory worker Saleem Sinai, one of 1001 children born as India won independence from Britain in 1947. The critic Malcolm Bradbury acclaimed the novel's achievement in The Modern British Novel (Penguin, 1994): 'a new start for the late-twentieth-century novel.' Rushdie's third novel, Shame (1983), which many critics saw as an allegory of the political situation in Pakistan, won the Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Fiction. The publication in 1988 of his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, lead to accusations of blasphemy against Islam and demonstrations by Islamist groups in India and Pakistan. An Evening with Liao Yiwu

September 13, 2011 | The New School, Tishman Auditorium | New York City With Liao Yiwu, Wen Huang, Salman Rushdie, and Philip Gourevitch PEN American Center is honored to present poet, novelist, musician, and documentarian Liao Yiwu, one of China's most exciting and most censored writers, in his first U.S. appearance. Liao Yiwu, who has been called the "Studs Terkel of China" for his vivid literary portraits of the lives of ordinary Chinese, was denied permission to travel to New York for the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature earlier this year, but escaped to Berlin via the Vietnamese border on July 6, 2011. Mr. Liao was imprisoned for four years in the 1990s for his epic poem "Massacre," a condemnation of the government's bloody crackdown at Tiananmen Square, and has endured constant harassment since. Though all his books are banned in China, he has continued to write. He is visiting New York on the eve of the publication of his new book, entitled God Is Red: The Secret Story of How Christianity Survived and Flourished in Communist China, translated by Wen Huang. Huang, a journalist and author, also joins Liao at the event. Not only has Huang been working actively to support and publicize Liao Yiwu's work since 2001, he has translated Liao's major works into English, including God is Red. Huang also received a PEN Translation Fund Grant in 2007. PEN President Kwame Anthony Appiah notes, "As it gets harder for independent-minded writers to leave China, an opportunity like this to hear directly from a great Chinese writer is an increasingly precious thing." This very special evening of music and words includes a reading from his forthcoming book and a performance of the xiao, or Chinese flute, which Mr. Liao learned to play while incarcerated. I don't think he articulates it very well, but Mos actually makes an important point here: the application of force is merely one approach that we turn to by default, and it's just not effective in every situation; in some situations, it may actually be counter-productive. Contrary to what Mos said, though, I think Obama is still stuck in that paradigm. It would be nice if he can see beyond it.

Part 1: Panel on Rushdie issue, Jaipur Literature Festival 2012

Sorry about picture and shakiness - this all happened pretty fast. Jaipur Literature Festival 2012 - Salman Rushdie's visit was cancelled due to threats of violence from certain Muslim groups. This issue dominated the festival. To make up for his non-appearance at the festival and uphold freedom of speech, a Skype video appearance by Salman was arranged for Jan 24, the last day of the festival. Islamist protestors appeared inside the festival to protest the appearance, with (they said) more massing outside the gates, who had gathered in parks in Jaipur. The festival organizers were forced to cancel the Skype video chat for fear of violence against festivalgoers and police action. Soon after, top Indian journalist Tarun Tejpal in cooperation with festival organizer Sanjoy Roy arranged a panel discussion on what had just happened. India's image dented after Rushdie controversy

In the face of the huge political furore over Salman Rushdie's attendance at the Jaipur literary festival the noted author cancelled his participation in person. International papers have been crying shame over the way the author's voice has been muffled and the way the administration did not back him or his right to freedom of expression in the face of the radicals' ire.But support for Rushdie came from his own circle .The organisers of the Jaipur Literature Festival stopped novelist Hari Kunzru from reading excerpts from Rushdie's " The Satanic Verses", saying they could face police action. The radicals of course have been rejoicing at the way they got their way without much effort. How Spielberg Might Respond to Terry Gilliam & Salman Rushdie

At the 2002 Telluride Film Festival, director Terry Gilliam and author Salman Rushdie, during a conversation of science fiction films, exchanged a series of criticisms on a handful of Steven Spielberg films -- including "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977), "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982), and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (2001). Most significantly, both Gilliam and Rushdie were under a popular impression that Spielberg had tampered with Stanley Kubrick's vision of "A.I." and had supposedly slapped on the film's half-hour finale at the last minute.
